The State of Interior Design Industry Report

A companion to the previously released Trends Outlook Report, this State of the Interior Design report is filled with key information and statistics detailing the current state of the industry with implications and analytics on the entire workforce spanning from students to professionals.

Notable insights from the report include: 

  • 4,500 interior design jobs added by employers in 2022

  • The average annual salary has increased by 0.5% at $62,859; there’s a 2.2% increase in average hourly wage at $30.75

  • New York is the highest paying city for interior designers with an average annual wage of around $81,000

  • Despite making up 88.5% of the interior design workforce, women earn slightly less than men, around $0.98 for every dollar men earn

  • There was a 2.9% increase (from 2021) in certification with 15,159 NCIDQ Certificate holders in 2022

  • By the end of 2022, 30 U.S. jurisdictions recognize the interior design practice in some way, providing permitting privileges for qualified interior designers

  • Over 9,000 interior design students completed their degree program and graduated in 2022; 85% of students who graduated were employed as interior designers

  • The number of interior design firms increased 3.7% since 2021 with around 17,000 total in 2022. 

  • California has not only the most interior design firms, but also the highest number of employed designers in firms
